Francis Grose was a well-known English antiquary, born in 1731. He was very interested in heraldry and antiquities, so his father bought him a place in the college of arms. This he resigned in 1751, to avoid being relocated to Scotland where his regiment had been posted.
William Devereux and his elder brother, Walter Devereux, continued their family's support of the de Bohun family, and both participated in Edward III's 1336 invasion of Scotland. William Devereux was granted Letters of Protection for service in Scotland on 3 July 1335, and for this service was knighted about 1337.

Greenan Castle is a ruined 17th century castle standing in a precarious position above a vertical sea cliff. This site has been a defensive one for thousands of years, with a 0.4 hectare promontory fort pre-dating the castle. As early as the 12th century, and possibly earlier, a motte and bailey castle was built within the inner defences of the fort.

On 4 October 1894 Andrew Carnegie in Jedburgh gave a speech about the new library which he had funded in the town's High Street. This library however proved inadequate and a new library was constructed on Castlegate where the Nag's Head Inn had stood.
